Most modern geo-physical research for solving the Gediminas mountain problems will start in a week2017-06-21
Today, in Vilnius, there has been a meeting of specialist delegations from the Lithuanian Geological Survey under the Ministry of the Environment (LGS) and the Polish Geological Institute (PGI), during which the parties agreed on common work of researching the Gediminas mountain. It will be started in a week, i.e. on 28 June.
The purpose of the research is to establish the spatial geological constitution of the mountain, the size of slope deformations and the depth of cracks, to locate tunnels and other premises made in the mountain during war. The results will be used for preparing the project of management of the southeast slope and providing for measures of stabilisation of the other slopes.
Five Polish specialists will arrive to Vilnius with their devices and will perform research of the Gediminas mountain at the expense of the PGI using four methods: electro-tomography, shallow seismicity, geo-conductivity and geo-radar. Such a complex geo-physical research, as Jonas Satkūnas, the Director of the LGS said, has not been yet performed in Lithuania.
The LGS specialists that will take part in the research will provide geological and geodetic data, logistical assistance. At first, the southeast slope, which is most damaged and is actively deforming, will be researched. Experts of the PGI delegation, who have been visiting Vilnius since Monday, drew attention to deformations of this slope and threat posed by them for the Palace of the Grand Dukes.
This delegation, led by the PGI Director Sławomir Mazurek, arrived to Lithuania on the initiative of the Minister of Environment Kęstutis Navickas and upon the invitation of Milda Dargužaitė, the Chancellor of the Government. The Polish experts examined the Gediminas mountain, got familiar with research results and the project of management of the northwest slope of the mountain.
After the common geo-physical research is agreed upon, work will be carried out in three stages. After researching the southeast slope, research work will be carried out on the top of the mountain, after that the western and south slopes will be researched.
