The most beautiful Lithuanian hill fort has been elected2017-06-05
From now on hill forts of Kernavė can take pride in yet another status received: after two months of voting the Lithuanians have chosen the site as the most beautiful. This voting is one of the initiatives taken in 2017 to commemorate the year of hill forts announced in Lithuania. It is a great occasion to visit this year not only leaders of the voting chart but also other human and natural heritage objects. It has been estimated that there are almost 900 hill forts in Lithuania, however the actual number can be much higher because many of them are still hidden in the forests.
The winner of the vote, the Kernavė site located in Širvintos District in a valley of the river Neris is one of centres of birth of the Lithuanian state; since 2004 it has been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site ensemble consists of a hill fort called the Aukuras (Altar) Hill, two front castles called the Mindaugas Throne and the Lizdeika Hill, the rear castles called the Garrison Hill and the Kriveikiškiai Hill Fort. The second best chosen hill fort known as the Šatrija hill fort is one of the highest hills of Žemaitija located in the Varniai Regional Park, Telšiai District. The hill height is almost 229 m, it offers a picturesque landscape and view over other hill forts located nearby. The third place in the vote went to the Merkinė hill fort located in the town of Merkinė, in Dzūkija National Park. This hill is one of the most visited sights in Dzūkija region; it offers a view over the point of confluence of the rivers Nemunas and Merkys.
To commemorate the year of the hill forts more than 1000 participants took part in the voting giving their votes for the most beautiful, most favourite or the most visited hill fort. The vote was hosted by the website pamatykLietuvoje.lt, which presents the most comprehensive map of sightseeing places of Lithuania, in conjunction with the State Service for Protected Areas, which supervises activity of national and regional parks.
