Requirements for the management of water bodies relaxed

2017-04-21

From 1 May of this year, persons who wish to manage plants of water bodies and their shores will be able to do this in a much simpler way. The cutting of aquatic plants will no longer require the preparation of water body management documents if such operations are carried out on water bodies or their shores in recreational areas of cities or towns.

The Description of the requirements for the management of surface water bodies as amended by an order of the Minister of Environment provides that a water body management project must be prepared where management or cleaning operations of a water body located in a protected area are carried out in a territory of more than 0.04 ha or where more than 0.1 ha of aquatic plants are planned to be cut in a water body that is situated in a non-protected area. Any restoration (renaturalisation) of an artificially straightened river section requires a water body management project, regardless of whether that water body is within or outside a protected area.

On receiving a report from a person who intends to manage a water body in a protected area, the Directorate of that protected area will take an appropriate decision. If a water body or its part subject to management is located in the territory of a cultural heritage object or site, or in the subzone of their buffer zone against physical impact, these documents will be coordinated with the territorial divisions of the Department of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture. Where management affects a water body or its part that is in the territory of the karst region of Northern Lithuania, the documents will be coordinated by the Lithuanian Geological Survey under the Ministry of Environment.
