Oak grove Izraelita planted in Vilnius district in honour of Lithuanian-Israeli friendship

2017-04-21

Today, the Israeli Embassy in Lithuania, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, the public institution Vilnius Forest Enterprise and the Vilnius District Municipality, has planted an oak grove near Rukainiai in Vilnius district together with schoolchildren from all over Lithuania. The grove has been named Izraelita.

The 25th anniversary of the Lithuanian-Israeli diplomatic relations has been celebrated the whole year in an atmosphere of genuine friendship. The oak grove has been planted in the same spirit, evidencing the strong and ever growing relationship between the two states.

“In Judaism, the tradition of tree planting that counts thousands of years has survived until today. It symbolises the relationship between man and earth, the synthesis of which creates a prosperous future. A tree is a symbol of human existence and the main value of the life of an individual and community. Together with our Lithuanian friends today we are planting oak-trees that symbolise force and wealth in Lithuanian culture”, said Israeli Ambassador Amir Maimon.

“Izraelita is a symbolic name, and a reflection of the long-lasting and diverse history of Jews and Lithuanians. Remembering the painful past and acknowledging our mistakes, we must create a new future together. The planting of the Izraelita Grove is a step of this kind in this direction in particular. It is my great honour to be invited for this symbolic act. A lot of common work awaits us in the future when perpetuating the names of killed Jews, as well as the names of those who lost their lives in the depth of our forests”, said Minister of Environment Kęstutis Navickas in support of the grove planting initiative.

The grove covers an area of 0.9 hectare. Over 500 participants in the event have planted about 3 600 young oak-trees. Taking part in the initiative were children from the municipalities of Kupiškis, Prienai, Anykščiai, Švenčionys, Vilkaviškis, Vilnius and Vilnius district.
