Today, in Brussels, Minister of Environment Kęstutis Navickas has met with Minister of Agriculture and the Environment of Finland Kimmo Tiilikainen to discuss the issues related to the management of the state forestry sector that are important for our country.
The main theme of the meeting is the centralised management model planned to be implemented in Lithuania. Minister Kimmo Tiilikainen has shared the experience of his country. In Finland, state forests are managed by the state enterprise Metsähallitus. According to Minister Kimmo Tiilikainen, such model where a single enterprise is responsible for the management of the forestry sector allows for more effective resolution of environmental, economic and social problems and promotion of regional development.
The Minister of Agriculture and the Environment of Finland has emphasised that the aforementioned state enterprise which finances its economic activities from received income manages an area of over 12 million ha. This territory includes not only state forests and water bodies but protected area as well.
In Brussels, both Ministers participated in the meeting of the EU Environment Council held to discuss relevant EU environmental policy issues.
