Almost half of Lithuanian anthrax burial sites undergo checks2017-02-21
The Lithuanian Geological Survey (LGT) under the Ministry of Environment has checked almost a half of the anthrax burial sites existing in Lithuania that are centres of geological environmental pollution. According to LGT Director Jonas Satkūnas, this work will be carried on this year as well.
Last autumn, inventories of 39 anthrax centres were taken in the municipalities of Ignalina, Šalčininkai, Kaunas, Kaišiadorys and Molėtai districts and Kaunas City. During such checks LGT specialists verify the state of an anthrax burial site containing livestock that have died from this dangerous infectious disease, collect data and provide conclusions and recommendations on how to manage its territory.
Anthrax centres must be enclosed and marked by a warning sign. Any excavations or planning of any development of water management facilities in their territories is forbidden.
At present the LGT information system contains data on 118 inventoried anthrax burial sites. According to the information of the State Food and Veterinary Service, there are 262 such sites in Lithuania.
