Limestone will last Lithuania for decades2017-02-08
According to information of the Lithuanian Geological Survey (LGT) under the Ministry of Environment, limestone mined for cement production last year amounted to 680 000 cubic metres. The average annual amount of limestone mined over the last five years has been 688 000 cubic metres. This is the volume needed by the public limited liability company Akmenės cementas for cement production. This limestone is mined in the Karpėnai quarry, Akmenė district.
Triassic clay mined in Lithuania’s deepest Šaltiškiai clay pit, Akmenė district, is also used for cement production. The amount of clay mined last year was 229 000 cubic metres.
According to LGT Director Jonas Satkūnas, these explored mineral resources will be sufficient for many decades.
Limestone and clay are mined by the public limited liability company Naujasis kalcitas.
