Oak of Stelmužė taking part in European Tree of the Year 2017 contest

2017-02-02

The Oak of Stelmužė is taking part in the European Tree of the Year contest. This contest will select the European Tree of the Year from among 16 candidates, one candidate from each European country participating in the contest. A Lithuanian tree is taking part in this contest for the first time.

The contest is organised by the Environmental Partnership Association with support from the European Commission. According to the organisers, ‘The European Tree of the Year’ is not a tree beauty contest. Its aim is to stress the importance of trees in the sphere of European nature and cultural heritage. The tree of each European country participating in this contest has its own story.

Last year, people elected the Oak of Stelmužė the tree of Lithuania. The oak grows in Stelmužė village, Zarasai district, and is considered not only the oldest tree of Lithuania but also one of the oldest trees in Europe. The age of this giant measuring almost 10 m in diameter and 19 m in height is estimated to be about 1 000 years.

Voters can choose not more than two trees of their liking on the internet website www.treeoftheyear.org and vote for them using their personal emails. The voting will take place until 28 February of this year.
