Neighbouring states promise to come to assistance of Lithuanian environmentalists in investigating illegal shipments of waste2016-12-05
In late November of this year, Riga (Latvia) hosted a forum of authorities that organise control of transboundary movements of waste. The event was attended by specialists of the Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian and Polish authorities in charge of the preparation, implementation and updating of the plan for inspections of transboundary movements of waste for 2017–2019, and officers of the customs office of the Republic of Latvia, the police, the association of packaging managers, etc. Lithuanian was represented by officials of the State Environmental Protection Service.
At the forum, the representatives of state environmental protection presented reports on the relevant issues of waste management, the approach to the control of waste movements and problems with organising such control and the importance of providing information on the shipment of waste. A draft plan for inspections of transboundary movements of waste for 2017–2019 and its priorities were presented as well. An essential focus of the presentation was transboundary cooperation in conducting inspections and providing information on the export and import of waste and the possibility to develop an information system of movements of waste. All the parties attending the forum acknowledged the need for such a system.
The forum ended in a discussion on the challenges of transboundary movements of waste and the implementation of the plan for inspections of transboundary movements of waste. The possibilities of organising joint training and inspections of transboundary movements of waste next year were also addressed.
