Cooperation between Lithuania and the UN Economic Commission discussed in Quito2016-10-20
Minister Kęstutis Trečiokas, who this week is attending the conference of the United Nations Human Settlements Program HABITAT in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, has met with Christian Friis Bach, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) .
Both parties discussed the cooperation of Lithuania and the ECE in implementing the New Urban Agenda adopted by this conference. Appreciating Lithuania’s efforts to implement the ECE project of Smart Sustainable Cities, Christian Friis Bach invited Lithuania for further active cooperation and the sharing of good practice with the European Commission and other states.
Kęstutis Trečiokas also noted out country’s achievements in modernising buildings and improving their energy efficiency. The minister confirmed that in this field we would continue with the active implementation of the required measures and the sharing of good practice in the future.
Christian Friis Bach welcomed Lithuania’s active implementation of the international environmental agreements such as the Espoo and Arhus Conventions. According to him, the contribution of Lithuania to the activities of the committees and working groups of these conventions has received a favourable evaluation by other parties to the conventions as well.
The ECE Executive Secretary was interested in the status of cooperation between Lithuania and Belarus on the management of the Nemunas basin waters. Kęstutis Trečiokas remarked that both parties saw this issue as very important. Lithuanian and Belarusian representatives were constantly participating in meetings on the management of the Nemunas basin waters and were planning joint actions. The minister thanked the ECE for its support in organising such meetings and said that the experts of both parties would be meeting in Minsk in November to discuss further actions in addressing the problems related to the quality of the Nemunas basin waters.
