Daiva Matonienė, vice minister of the Environment, along with other representatives of the Ministry is attending a global platform dedicated to perspectives and initiatives of sustainable and smart cities held on 21 to 22 of July 2016 in Geneva (Switzerland), and organised by the United Nations and the International Telecommunication Union. This is the first meeting of this kind to have successfully gathered and united most of countries world over for accomplishment of the sustainable development objectives and providing new opportunities to exchange the best practises.
The meeting currently held in Geneva has also discussed and determined the management structure of the Initiative for Sustainable Cities, with the Member States of the United Nations to decide on a more effective implementation of indicators of smart cities. Daiva Matonienė, vice minister of the Environment, was called on to act as a coordinated (leader) of the initiative for Sustainable and Smart Cities.
According to Dalia Matonienė, “I am glad Lithuania is now considered a reliable partner. I take this offer to join as a leader of the international Initiative for Sustainable Cities as a type of recognition. This initiative involves majority of representatives of countries world over to ensure a balanced and sustainable development, as well as active implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. A sustainable city implies a city with economic, environmental, social, and cultural environment favourable for well-being. Energy efficient buildings mark a prerequisite for any sustainable city. Lithuania has demonstrated a successful implementation of the programmes on the energy efficiency of buildings. This leads to smaller emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, preserves natural resources and improves urban environment. It further leads to a positive impact on the national economy.”
The meeting taking place includes analysis on the concept of sustainable city and is expected to come up with an action plan for international working groups, later to contribute to accomplishment of the objectives of sustainable city.
