Ukraine urging Lithuania to invest in waste management sector and solar energy

2016-06-09

“Ukraine is extremely interested in the experience of Lithuania when it comes to sustainable use of natural resources, development of waste management system and of solar energy, and it is intention of Ukraine to see closer cooperation with Lithuania”, or so Kęstutis Trečiokas, Minister of Environment commented his meeting with Ostap Semerak, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine that took place yesterday. The meeting took place in Batumi, where the two ministers are attending the Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference organised by the UN Economic Commission for Europe.

According to Ostap Semerak, Ukraine has abundant natural resources thus it is important to ensure these are used efficiently, leading to a need of improved management of the resources available and improved control system. This is where Lithuanian experience could be useful. According to the minister from Ukraine, assessment of the area of catastrophe at Chernobyl nuclear power plant has revealed some new opportunities for development of solar energy. The businesses will therefore be invited to invest into the development of this energy sector in Chernobyl region.

Both ministers have pointed out that Lithuanian businesses are eager to take business opportunities offered by Ukraine and have agreed to invite Lithuania businesses to take part in development of solar energy in Chernobyl region. Lithuanian businesses will also be invited to invest into waste management sector, since Ukraine is in need of an infrastructure for management and recycling of industrial waste. The Ukrainian side is also interested in the package waste deposit system introduced in Lithuania. Ukrainian partners would like to share the Lithuanian experience implementing the principle of “polluter pays”.

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine wishes to see stronger cooperation and has therefore contacted the Lithuanian Ministry of Environment with a proposal to consider a bilateral agreement on cooperation in the field of environment, including some tangible steps. Minister Kęstutis Trečiokas welcomed the idea of such an agreement and added that Lithuania was ready to share its experience and seek closer cooperation in the nearest future.
