The election is organised by the Ministry of Environment and the public establishment Lithuanian Arboriculture Centre. The applications will be accepted throughout June, from the 1st to the 30th day of the month. The participants of the contest will be selected by a commission composed of representatives of the organisers and public environmental organisations, a landscape architect, a specialist in ethnography or history, a photographer or professional of visual arts and a dendrologist or arborist. For the second and subsequent elections, the commission should be supplemented also by the applicant whose tree was elected the winner in the previous year.
The elected tree of Lithuania will take part in the European Tree of the Year contest next year. The contest was started in 2011 on the initiative of the Czech Republic. That year the lime tree of Leliceni, Romania, was elected the European Tree of the Year, followed by the lime tree of Felsőmocsolád, Hungary, in 2012, the plane tree of Eger, Hungary, in 2013, the elm tree of Sliven, Bulgaria, in 2014, the oak tree of the Saaremaa Island, Estonia, in 2015, and this year’s oak tree of Bátaszék, Hungary.
