Long-term guidelines for environmental protection now included in the National Environmental Protection Strategy2016-05-02
The Ministry of Environment proudly presents the National Environmental Protection Strategy (available in both Lithuanian and English). The publication presents a vision for environmental protection until 2050, along with its implementation targets until 2030, distributed across 4 key environmental protection policies, including: sustainable use of natural resources and waste treatment, improvement of the quality of environment, preservation of stability of ecosystems, mitigation of climate change, and adjustment to the environmental changes caused by the climate change. This paramount document gained approval of the Parliament in spring 2015.
According to Kęstutis Trečiokas, Minister of Environment, “Sector of environmental protection is in extreme need of some long-term outlooks for environmental protection policy. The longer the period in question, the more rational, targeted, and sustainable decisions are open to us (this applies to both environmental issues, and those of public welfare, and national progress)”.
The main objective of the Lithuanian policy of environmental protection is to ensure a sound, clean, and safe environment in Lithuania, one that allows for sustainable coordination of needs of the general public, environmental protection, and economy. The Ministry of Environment is responsible for coordinated implementation of the National Environmental Protection Strategy through annual monitoring of values reflecting accomplishment of performance criteria of the strategy. An interim assessment of the strategy is scheduled in 2020, while the final assessment of implementation of the Strategy is expected in 2030. For the outcome of 2015, please see Chapter III. Implementation of coordinated inter-institutional action plans, development programmes, and strategies of the Report of the Ministry of Environment for 2015 (http://www.am.lt/VI/index.php#a/16905).
