A bibliographic rarity – monograph on Aukštumala raised bog – translated into Lithuanian2016-03-16
Tomorrow, 17 March, at 3 p.m., the National Visitor Centre of the State Service for Protected Areas of the Ministry of Environment will hold a presentation of the Lithuanian translation of a monograph on the raised bog of Aukštumala in the Nemunas Delta by the famous German botanist C. A. Weber.
This raised bog became the first wetland in the world subject to scientific research and description. C. A. Weber’s monograph “On the Flora and the Development of the Raised Bog of Aukštumala in the Nemunas Delta in Comparison with other Raised Bogs of the Earth” was published in 1902. This book has been known as a legend for many years and has become a bibliographic rarity. The English translation of the monograph was only issued in 2002. From now on, the book can be read in Lithuanian as well.
C. A. Weber’s research work that has not lost its relevance to date reveals not only the structure of the Aukštumala Raised Bog and the processes taking place there, but also the common features and development phases of European raised bogs.
The event saw the opening of a photography exhibition on the history and the present and future of the Aukštumala Raised Bog. A project to restore this wetland has been implemented under the EU LIFE+ Programme since 2013. The project is being implemented by the Lithuanian Nature Fund, the Nemunas Delta Regional Park etc., and is also supported by the Ministry of Environment.
