The future of the Curonian Lagoon to benefit from an open discussion2016-03-04
The Ministry of Environment is inviting the public to show active involvement in an open discussion on the future of the Curonian Spit. The discussion already began last week in Nida where about seventy representatives of national and municipal institutions, various organisations, the public and local communities, who had rallied on the initiative of the Ministry of Environment, for two days discussed, debated and searched for the most suitable ways to conserve the values of the Curonian Spit.
‘The period of conflict and distrust should be replaced by work based on cooperation’, says Vidmantas Bezaras, Director of the Ministry’s Protected Areas and Landscape Department. ‘That is why we will continue the open discussion that will be held in Klaipėda and Nida already this month’.
In 2000, the Curonian Spit was inscribed on the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites; therefore, its protection should be based not only on national but also on international legislation. One of the technical requirements is to draw up a management plan for this area with the World Heritage Site status.
The Curonian Spit management plan is being developed by an interinstitutional working party set up by the Ministry of Environment. The preparation of the plan draws on the Description of the Outstanding Universal Value of the Curonian Spit approved by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in 2014.
