Ministers of the Environment of the Baltic Council of Ministers meeting in Žemaitija2015-09-07
Today, Žemaitija national park by Plateliai Lake will host an opening of a 2-day meeting of the ministers of the environment of the Baltic Council of Ministers. In 2015, Lithuania is the host country, since it is the presidency of the Council, one of the key inter-governmental co-operation institutions in the Baltics.
Kęstutis Trečiokas, Lithuanian Minister of the Environment, Edgars Tavars, parliamentary secretary of the Latvian Ministry of the Environment and Regional Development, and Marko Pomerants, Estonian Minister of the Environment, along with their delegations, are expected to discuss two issues of paramount importance, i.e. protection of the aquatic environment and the climate change.
As far as water protection field is concerned, attention will focus on management of river basins, drafting of programmes for protection instruments, improvement of aquatic eco state and promotion of intergovernmental co-operation. Speaking of issues of climate change, those present at the meeting will exchange their opinion on the review of the EU system of trade in negotiable pollution permit and funding to be made available for combatting the climate change.
