Governments of 18 municipalities prohibit access to forests due to forest fire threat2015-08-27
As many as 41 municipal governments have restricted access to forests due to a serious threat of forest fires. Nearly one third of municipal governments have temporarily prohibited visits to forests in their respective territories.
According to forecasts from the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service under the Ministry of the Environment, over the next few days the fire danger in the forests of the country will qualify as class 4 and class 5. The greatest fire threat is currently recorded in the forests in central Lithuania.
“Over the past few weeks, there were nearly 50 forest fires; fortunately, they have not spread and have been extinguished quickly. We encourage the responsible officials of all municipal governments to consider the degree of forest fire threat and take all the required steps. We will apply to the responsible officials of Neringa City Municipal Government once again with the request to prohibit smoking in the forests of the Curonian Spit. We may not behave irresponsibly and must prevent the tragedy that happened last year, which was likely caused by a cigarette end, from reoccurring,” minister of the environment Kęstutis Trečiokas said.
Based on the Forest Fire Danger Map published and updated by the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service, a serious (class 4) forest fire threat is observed in all Lithuanian forests. It was reported that of 250 forest fires recorded from the beginning of this year as many as 50 occurred in the past 2 weeks.
According to data from the Directorate General of State Forests, the governments of the following 18 municipalities have prohibited visits to forests: Biržai District, Kaišiadorys District, Ignalina, Jonava District, Jurbarkas District, Kalvarija, Kaunas District, Kelmė District, Kėdainiai District, Klaipėda City, Marijampolė District, Molėtai District, Prienai District, Radviliškis District, Raseiniai District, Rokiškis District, Trakai District, and Vilkaviškis District.
