This year the funds earmarked for the acquisition of packaging waste containers by municipalities is almost 3 million euros2015-05-20
This year municipalities are to receive about 2.7 million euros under the Product or Packaging Waste Management Programme for the acquisition of packaging waste sorting containers and their supply to the population.
“About 70,000 households throughout Lithuania should be supplied with such containers this year. We hope that we will manage to collect thousands of tonnes of packaging waste in them, which will no longer get into the common waste stream and, what is more, will bring benefit as they will go into recycling,” says Minister of Environment, Kęstutis Trečiokas.
Only 16 municipalities have made contracts on the purchase of packaging waste containers so far, in particular those of Panevėžys, Šiauliai and Palanga cities, and Anykščiai, Biržai, Kelmė, Kretinga, Akmenė, Švenčionys, Šiauliai, Rokiškis, Kaunas, Jonava, Kaišiadorys, Šilutė and Trakai districts. The Ministry of Environment is urging other municipalities to conclude contracts as well, and ensure that the largest possible number of households has this sort of containers.
For example, the Vilnius City Municipality is planning to acquire 1120 packaging waste containers with the funds from the Packaging Waste Management Programme, and another 1120 will be purchased for owners of individual houses with money from producers and importers.
Residents should contact their municipalities about the exact time and conditions of distribution of the containers.
