National Environmental Protection Strategy approved2015-04-16
On 16 April, the Seimas approved the new National Environmental Protection Strategy drawn up by the Ministry of Environment.
The new National Environmental Protection Strategy lays down the environmental protection vision up to 2050 and its implementation goals up to 2030. The strategy identifies four key long-term environmental protection policies, which are the sustainable use of natural resources and waste management, improvement of the quality of the environment, maintenance of the stability of ecosystems and mitigation of climate change as well as adapting to environmental changes caused by climate change.
Until now, the main long-term environmental planning document was the State Environmental Protection Strategy approved by the Seimas in 1996. It was in effect for eighteen years. During this period of time, Lithuania underwent geopolitical, economic and demographic changes and saw the quality of the environment change. New factors affecting the environment and natural resources emerged. Therefore, the previous strategy was no longer relevant and failed to reflect the current situation and expected challenges ahead.
