Reforestation to cover over 9,000 ha in 20152015-04-02
Reforestation works are gathering momentum in Lithuania as April is the most favourable month for planting trees.
This spring, 42 forestry departments across the country are planning to reforest 9,708 hectares of formerly logged state-owned forests.
The largest areas of forests will be replanted by these departments: 498.3 ha in Kėdainiai, 461 ha in Panevėžys and 433 ha in Ukmergė. In addition, the Marijampolė, Tauragė, Pakruojis and Jurbarkas departments are planning to restore 377.6 ha, 339.3 ha, 333.5 ha, and 307.4 ha of forests, respectively. More than 200 ha of logging areas will be reforested by the Joniškis, Mažeikiai, Kuršėnai, Kretinga, Kazlų Rūda, Kaunas, Radviliškis and other forestry departments.
In addition, afforestation works will be carried out on some new areas unsuitable for agriculture that have been handed over to the forestry departments by the National Land Service. A total of 781 ha are to be afforested, mainly in the Marijampolė, Šilutė and Valininkai forest departments – 54.3 ha, 47.5 ha, and 41.4 ha, respectively.
Private forest and land owners also intend to plant more than 2,000 ha of new or formerly logged forests with trees this year, using European Union support funds for afforestation.
