Increasing numbers of foreigners travel to fish in Lithuania

2015-02-03

Lithuanian water bodies are becoming increasingly attractive to foreign amateur fishermen. Last year the number of fishing permits issued to foreigners exceeded twofold that of the previous year.

In 2014, foreign citizens obtained almost 5,500 permits for amateur fishing in non-leased state water bodies. They acquired 3,501 amateur fishing tickets and 1,443 amateur fishing cards for fishing in the water bodies of the Nemunas Delta Regional Park and 542 amateur fishing cards for salmon fishing. For fishing permits foreign fishermen paid around LTL 50,000 (around EUR 14,500) into the state budget for the restoration and protection of fish resources.

The number of such fishing permits acquired by foreigners in 2013 was lower two times. They purchased 1,796 amateur fishing tickets and 322 amateur fishing cards for fishing in the water bodies of the Nemunas Delta Regional Park and 411 amateur fishing cards for salmon fishing.

With a view to ensure that fishermen arriving in Lithuania have the required information about the possibilities and conditions of fishing in our country, the Rules for Amateur Fishing in Internal Waters and the Conditions of Limited Fishing Regulation Measures.

The promotion of incoming fishing tourism is one of the tasks set in the project “Fishing Paradise” initiated by the Ministry of Environment. It is developed in Zarasai and Molėtai district municipalities.
