Two more valuable collections donated to the Museum of Zoology

2015-01-16

Recently, the Kaunas-based Tadas Ivanauskas Museum of Zoology was enriched with two more large collections of butterflies. They were donated by amateur entomologists Vitalijus Bačianskas and Vytautas Inokaitis. Both collections consist of more than 15 thousand of butterflies.

Vitalijus Bačianskas assembled his collection in 1995–2014. It is composed of more than six and a half thousand of butterflies of 750 species. The majority of them were collected in the districts of Pasvalys, Kaišiadorys, Kaunas and Varėna. One of the most valuable exhibits of this collection is Catocala adultera Mengel.

The collection donated by Vytautas Inokaitis consists of more than 8.5 thousand of butterflies of 663 species. It was assembled in Central Lithuania, in the districts of Kaunas, Kaišiadorys and Jonava, in 2002–2014.

All the collections of the Kaunas Tadas Ivanauskas Museum of Zoology make up the largest set of fauna exhibits in Lithuania. More than 150 years ago, Leonardas Ivanauskas started to collect it, and then this tradition was further continued by Prof. Tadas Ivanauskas, his students and colleagues.

The Museum houses animal specimens of all systematic groups in the world. After the specimens have been properly prepared for storage, they are kept at the Museum for an unlimited period of time. The newly renovated and equipped storage facilities enable to maintain appropriate storage conditions.
