Hazardous landslides can be predicted from now on2014-12-09
From now on, Lithuania will be able to predict potential landslides and prevent one of the most dangerous geological phenomena in the country. Sophisticated software installed by the Lithuanian Geological Survey (LGS) under the Ministry of Environment allows a mathematical evaluation of the stability of especially problematic slopes from the geological point of view.
Landslides are common on steep slopes and are especially hazardous when occurring in urban areas. For example, the accident that happened on Vilkpėdės Street in Vilnius in 1982 even caused human casualties, and the 2000 landslide in Dvarčionys brought losses estimated at millions of litas.
At present the Geological Phenomena subsystem of the LGS Information System features 145 landslides that have taken place.
According to LGS Director Jonas Satkūnas, assessing the stability of slopes is one of the oldest and most important geotechnical tasks. The first attempts at that were made in Sweden back in 1916. Slope stability analysis is based on complicated mathematical calculations that are time-consuming and require expensive tests and accurate data.
The digital slope modelling software installed by LGS will help to assess the stability of slopes and take decisions necessary to stabilise them and this way protect human lives and property.
