Record breaking year for white storks2014-07-22
There have never been so many juvenile white storks registered in the Žuvintas area as this year. In comparison with 2013, which was also the record breaking year, the number of grown juvenile storks was higher by 22%. It seems likely that the results can be similar in more distant areas of Dzūkija and Suvalkija where storks are not being counted annually.
Director of Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve Arūnas Pranaitis said that this year broods of white storks are the most numerous during the entire period of registration of nests of these birds. In Žuvintas storks raised the average of three juveniles only in 2011 and this year. Three most numerous broods had five juvenile storks each.
The number of breeding storks is constantly growing in the biosphere reserve. Currently, there are 35 couples. This number was lower by one third a decade ago. Thus, it is no wonder that for the first time the number of juvenile storks exceeded one hundred this year – 112 juvenile storks left their nests. The great opportunity to choose the breeding sites undoubtedly has an impact on the growth of the population of storks.
In the biosphere reserve two thirds of stork nests are situated on utility poles. More than half of the nests are on the special nest foundations installed by power network workers.
