Record number of tenders received for EXPO pavilion procedure2014-02-13
The organisers of a simplified open tendering procedure for the design of Lithuania’s pavilion for the universal exposition EXPO 2015 in Milan have received a record number of tenders. A total of 27 conceptual designs have been submitted by 10 February, which is the deadline indicated in the terms of reference. The designs present a vision of what a building or a group of buildings that will house the Lithuanian exhibition should like look at the 2015 universal exposition.
‘The abundance of tenders not only shows a great interest in the possibility to design a prestigious building for a world-level event but also the increased confidence in that the tendering procedure is transparent and unbiased,’ says Minister of Environment Valentinas Mazuronis.
During the next two weeks, the tenders submitted will be presented for public debate in various cities of Lithuania. Starting today, the designs are on display in the lobby of the Great Hall of Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas (S. Daukanto Str. 28, Kaunas) where the first public debate is scheduled to take place at 4 p.m. on 17 February.
Next week the designs will be presented and discussed also in Klaipėda and Šiauliai, and from 24 February they will be made available to the public at the Lithuanian Union of Architects (Kalvarijų Str. 1, Vilnius) where the final public debate and meetings of the jury will take place.
The public debates may be attended by all persons who wish to participate, while architects, image specialists, professionals in the theme of the exposition and experts of various other fields will be invited to present their opinions on the submitted designs. According to the rules of the tendering procedure, experts will be asked to declare their impartiality and express their opinion both orally and in writing. Opinions will be welcome on internet websites as well.
A competent jury has been set up to evaluate the designs. In addition to representatives of the ministry that is the organiser of the tendering procedure, this time the jury includes architects, business people and well-known public figures: Gintautas Blažiūnas, Chairman of the Union of Architects; Robertas Dargis, President of the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists; Rimantas Buivydas, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University; architects Rolandas Palekas and Marius Šaliamoras; Professor, Ethnologist Libertas Klimka; journalist Paulius Jurkevičius working in Italy and writing on culinary art a great deal, and Edita Mildažytė, TV show host and author of the book Lithuania on a First Date.
According to the terms of reference, the design should comply with the main theme of EXPO 2015 ‘Feeding the Planet. Energy for life’, and present our country as ingeniously as possible. The successful tenderer will be awarded a contract on the preparation of a pavilion technical design and the supervision of its implementation.
Officially, Lithuania has participated in 10 universal expositions to date. At EXPO 2012 in South Korea, Lithuania’s pavilion received a silver award of the International Exhibitions Bureau. The presentation of our country at the expositions in China and Japan was equally impressive.
As the universal expositions return to Europe after a longer break, EXPO 2015 in Milan is expected to attract more than 140 participants and 30 million visitors from the old continent and the whole world.
