Minister of Environment Valentinas Mazuronis met the ambassadors extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Japan, Azerbaijan and Italy. The important points and prospects of cooperation with these states were discussed.
The meeting with the Japanese ambassador Kazuko Shiraishi was focused on energy issues and the opportunities of nuclear energy in Lithuania. According to Ms Kazuko Shiraishi, Japan is the country of advanced and environmentally friendly technologies, from which Lithuania could import required technologies. Mutually beneficial cooperation, as Minister Valentinas Mazuronis pointed out, is possible not only in the energy sector, but also in other fields, and this should be encouraged.
The Minister discussed prospects for cooperation with the ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr Hasan Mammadzada. During the meeting the ambassador was introduced to the variety of the functions of the Ministry of Environment. Its activities encompass many areas ranging from environmental protection and preservation of biodiversity to renovation of old apartment houses. Ambassador Hasan Mammadzada thinks that the environmental situation in Lithuania is good. Azerbaijan has well-developed oil and gas extraction industries, causing quite a few environmental challenges.
During the meeting with Minister Valentinas Mazuronis the Italian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Renato Maria Ricci, discussed problems which impede commissioning of the hazardous waste combustion facility built by an Italian company at Toksika enterprise in Šiauliai Region. The Minister assured he will make every effort to find the best solutions in order to change the current situation.
