Poachers will pay ten times more

2013-01-02

The Minister of Environment Valentinas Mazuronis signed a decree by which penalties for illegally hunted animals will be increased ten times. “Now poachers should think very well if it is worth to have illegal hunts, as it will make their wallets much lighter. The experience shows that environmental officers sooner or later catch the majority of poachers, thus I sincerely recommend for potential law breakers to forget this evil “trade” and pursue legal activities”, says the minister V.Mazuronis.

Fines for an illegally hunted moose, a deer and a fallow-deer have increased from 1750 to 17500 litas. Fees for the above mentioned female or offspring animals have been raised from 1050 to 10500 litas. Fines for a shot boar and hind will make 5000 litas (previously 500 litas), and for shooting offsprings of these animals fines will reach 3000 litas (instead of 300 litas).

Penalties have been also increased ten times for an illegally hunted wolf (up to 3000 litas), a badger (up to 3000 litas), a beaver and a mountain hare (up to 1000 litas). Fines for other killed mammals, except mousy rodents and ones included in the list of invasive species, now will make 500 litas instead of 50.

“Fines for the damage to environment and penalties are very important; however it is far from being the only measures. In my opinion, we should by no means forget tools which are used to commit a crime.  Therefore poachers’ nets, rifles, boats and even luxurious vehicles on which they arrive, must be confiscated. This is what we are seeking," the minister V. Mazuronis claims.

The provisions of the new decree regarding compensation for the damage done to animal species and their habitats come into effect on 15 January 2013.
