Lithuanian and Georgian Ministers of Environment ink cooperation agreement

2012-09-10

The Lithuanian Minister of Environment, Gediminas Kazlauskas, and his Georgian counterpart Giorgi Zedginidze have signed an agreement between the ministries headed by them on cooperation in the area of environmental protection. According to the Lithuanian minister, this agreement will help both countries to address national and international environmental challenges and improve the environmental condition of both countries.

It is planned to closely cooperate in monitoring the environment and pollution, handling and managing protected areas, developing eco-tourism and reintroducing species there, as well as organising European integration-related training for civil servants. The agreement provides for joint projects and programmes, exchange of information on environmental legislation, standards and plans, and scientific and technical information, as well as for joint expert meetings, conferences and consultations.

The agreement was signed during the intergovernmental conference “Tbilisi+35: Environmental Education for Sustainable Development” held in Tbilisi . The Lithuanian Minister of Environment also participated in the event, which was attended by almost 50 ministers from various countries of the world.

This large-scale international event was opened by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. Over 300 participants in the Tbilisi conference from more than 100 countries marked the 35th anniversary of the Tbilisi Declaration. This declaration was signed at the first intergovernmental environmental education conference organised by UNESCO in Tbilisi in 1977. As noted in a communiqué adopted by the participants in the conference “ Tbilisi +35: Environmental Education for Sustainable Development”, the declaration played an important role in the development of environmental education and dissemination of sustainable development ideas.
