The Curonian Spit hosts meeting for environment ministers of the Baltic Council of Ministers
2012-06-01A meeting for environment ministers of the Baltic Council of Ministers took place in Nida. Lithuanian Minister of Environment Gediminas Kazlauskas, Latvian Minister for Environmental Protection and Regional Development Edmunds Sprudzs and Deputy Secretary General of the Estonian Ministry of Environment Harry Liiv, together with their delegations, looked at the financial prospects of the EU environmental sector for 2014-2020 and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the three countries in preserving marine environment. This partnership is based on the agreement on cooperation in the field of environment signed on 4 June 2010 between Lithuanian, Estonian and Latvian governments.
The topics of the ministerial meeting included launching and implementing the new packaging deposit system across all three countries, issues of annual contributions to the Helsinki Commission and Latvia’s progress with the environmental education and environmental protection initiative project. Lithuanian representatives highlighted our country’s preparations for the upcoming EU presidency in 2013.
The meeting for environment ministers was hosted by Lithuania, which took over the presidency of the Baltic Council of Ministers – the institution for cooperation between Governments of the Baltic States – from Estonia on 1 January 2012.
