2012-03-05

Minister of Environment Gediminas Kazlauskas met Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Spain in Lithuania Miguel Arias Estevez. The meeting addressed opportunities of closer cooperation between Lithuania and Spain in the field of environment protection. The greatest focus was on climate change-related issues. The Minister and the Ambassador discussed the results and prospects of the contract made between Lithuania and Spain regarding the units of the established rate of greenhouse gas.

LTL 155 million – this much Spain paid Lithuania for sold accumulated excess units of the established rate of greenhouse gas. The contract was signed in June last year. These funds were included in the Special Programme on Climate Change. Part of the funding, LTL 89 million, has already been distributed to ten bus fleets across the cities of Lithuania which filed applications to procure low-pollutant buses to renew their vehicles. The rest of the funding will be used to purchase biofuel boilers for boiler-houses.
