The Implemented Environmental Management System Encourages to Spare Nature
2011-12-02The Ministry of Environment is the first state institution in , which has implemented an environmental management and audit scheme as per the requirements of its regulations and the standard LST EN ISO 14001:2005.
The environmental management and audit scheme of the European Union is based on the principle of voluntary participation. It is designed for enterprises and organisations, which commit to evaluate, manage and improve their environmental functionality. This system was designed in 1993 and revised in 2001.
By taking the decision to implement and constantly improve the environmental management system the department heads of the Ministry of Environment committed to reduce the negative impact of the ministry on the environment, rationally use resources, contribute to reduction of climate change, deterioration of forests, pollution of soil, air and water, improve the quality of services as well as encourage other institutions to implement the environmental management system. This position is reflected in the environmental policy pursued by the Ministry which is based on the assumption that the increase of economy, social progresses and environmental protection help to improve the quality of people’s lives.
The experience of applying the environmental system shows that it helps to reduce costs, improve management and employees’ teamwork as well as to increase their environmental awareness. According to the Chancellor of the Ministry Robertas Klovas, this system is mandatory to all the units of the ministry. The environmental management and audit committee established by the Minister of Environment is taking care that the system would not be “paper” and would be effective, useful and constantly improved. The members of this committee are heads of the divisions of the Ministry. This system was implemented in the Ministry using the financial support from the EU.
