Amber to represent Lithuania at World Expo 2012

2011-08-11

The project Amber was awarded the highest score (20.07 points) in the competition for the Lithuanian exposition for the EXPO 2012 exhibition, a panel of experts comprised of representatives from the Ministry of Environment and other bodies as well as public figures announced on 11 August.

Other short-listed projects included Lithuanian Secret (19.82 points), Lithuanian Underground Treasures (12.21 points), New Baltic Wave (10.61 points) and Lithuania: The Live Tree (10.21 points).

The authors of these proposals were also disclosed at the meeting of the panel of experts after the envelopes with encoded project mottos were opened. The project Amber was submitted by Klasikinis Portikas, Lithuanian Secret by the consortium of Mart Pro and Kauno Projektavimo Ir Konsultavimo Biuras, Lithuanian Underground Treasures by Ekspobalta, New Baltic Wave by Ekspozicijų Centras, and Lithuania: The Live Tree by Urban Architects.

The prize of LTL 15,000 will be awarded to the winner of the first place, LTL 10,000 will be paid for the second place, LTL 5,000 for the third place and LTL 2,500 for the fourth and fifth place. The winner of the competition will be invited to draw up the design of the Lithuanian pavilion and supervise the implementation process.

“The topic of amber dominates the top two projects. However, the highest-scoring project has a slightly stronger focus on it and is more attractive”, said Romas Jankauskas, Chairperson of the panel and Commissioner General of the Lithuanian Exposition at EXPO 2012.

According to Jankauskas, much will still have to be done after the final decision on the pavilion design is made. It will be necessary to select exhibits to capture the attention of visitors (e.g. whether Lithuania will be bold enough to show the most unique Lithuanian amber pieces with inclusions) and prepare a broad information and cultural programme with comprehensive coverage of our country. A small 322 m2 Lithuanian pavilion will be expanded by building a multipurpose space on the second floor where thematic presentations of Lithuania and events for specialists would take place.

Yeosu, a city on the southern seashore of South Korea, will host EXPO 2012 for three summer months between 12 May and 12 August. More than 100 countries and international organisations will participate at the exhibition which is expected to be visited by more than 8 million people.
