A good water status is expected to be achieved2010-11-24
Last week the Government approved management plans of the Venta, Lielupe and Daugava river basin districts. They provide for achieving a good status of part of the water bodies in this district by 2015. The Government has also approved measures for the implementation of the aforementioned plans. Such measures will sustain the surface water and groundwater status, promote more efficient use and preservation of water, and provide conditions for the consistent reduction of water pollution and the mitigation of flood/draught consequences.
Following EU accession, the management and protection of Lithuanian water bodies is performed according to the natural rather than administrative boundaries of river basins. To facilitate water management, river basins have been grouped into four districts, viz. Nemunas, Venta, Lielupe and Daugava. In July of this year, the Government approved the management plan of the Nemunas river basin district.
The approved management plans of the four river basin districts must be implemented in 2010-2015. They will be updated every six years thereafter. These plans are intended for the general public, state and municipal authorities, European Commission and various interests groups of Lithuania. The management plan of each river basin district must briefly describe the current status of its water bodies, provide measures for the improvement of the status, etc.
The general public may get more information about the water management of river basin districts and important water protection issues in documentary “How We Take Care of Our Water” and publication “Rivers and Me”.
