Lithuanian Day in a World Exhibition2010-10-25
With the World Exhibition in Shanghai EXPO 2010 coming to the end, the Lithuanian National Day was organised on 25 October. It was officially opened by the President of the country, Dalia Grybauskaitė.
The event participants included world-famous Lithuanians: the strongest person in the planet, Žydrūnas Savickas, basketball-player Šarūnas Marčiulionis, a former coach of the Chinese basket-ball team, Jonas Kazlauskas, and others. The National Day of Lithuania was concluded by a concert of national groups and performers. Visitors of the Lithuanian exposition learned about one of the oldest handicrafts of the Lithuanian people: woven national ribbons.
Lithuania’s participation in EXPO 2010 was organised by the Ministry of Environment. This world exhibition, the main theme of which was ‘Better City, Better Life’, paid much attention to almost all the areas of modern human life and activities without which a modern city is difficult to imagine. The Lithuanian pavilion chose a hot-air balloon as its symbol. The guests of the exhibition were invited to take a memorable flight over our country where modern buildings reflecting the progress of cities perfectly fit the ensemble of old architectural buildings. The exposition showed the unique nature of Lithuania and its cultural specificities.
During EXPO 2010, the Lithuanian pavilion had 5.5 million visitors and was 2-3 times more popular than the expositions of the other Baltic States.
