Meeting with the head of IAEA at the Ministry
Minister of Environment Gediminas Kazlauskas has met with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano currently on a visit to Lithuania.
Yukiya Amano was informed about the successful completion of the environmental impact assessment procedure of the future Visaginas nuclear power plant and the completed or ongoing environmental impact assessments of decommissioning projects.
The Minister of Environment shared information about Lithuania’s involvement in the environmental impact assessment of developmental projects of other nuclear power plants planned to be built in our region.
Gediminas Kazlauskas emphasised that any decision regarding the construction of nuclear power plants or the selection of the site can be made only in consultation with the neighbouring states, pursuant to international nuclear safety, radiation protection and environmental requirements, especially the provisions of the Espoo Convention and good practice examples.
The Minister of Environment expressed Lithuania’s concern over the violation of international good practice principles while selecting the sites for nuclear power plants planned to be built in Belarus and Russia (Kaliningrad). Gediminas Kazlauskas invited IAEA to get actively involved in the process related to the implementation of nuclear power plant projects in Kaliningrad and Belarus.
Yukiya Amano agreed that all possible measures must be taken to ensure nuclear safety. The head of IAEA also emphasised that the construction of nuclear facilities nonetheless was the matter of decision of each sovereign state.
