Activities of medical waste incineration company may be suspended
The activities of Senovė UAB, a medical waste incineration company located in Jočionių Street in Vilnius, may be suspended if it fails to carry out binding instructions repeatedly issued by environmentalists.
Last June, in view of concern expressed by the Lazdynai community of Vilnius about suspected excessive emission of pollutants into the atmosphere as a result of incineration of medical waste by Senovė, Gediminas Kazlauskas, the Minister of Environment, ordered stepping up the control of its activities, involving representatives of the community and municipality in these activities, and informing the public of the results of such control on a regular basis.
During a meeting with representatives of the public at the Ministry of Environment, it was agreed with representatives of the city community that data on the regular monitoring of pollutants emitted by the medical waste incineration plant would be published on a website round-the-clock and that anyone would be able to find out the level of emitted pollutants at any time. Seeking to ensure the residents’ right to information on the environmental condition, Vilnius Regional Environmental Protection Department officers instructed Senovė to publish such data on a website without interruption from 2 September.
The company has not carried out this instruction. It only publishes average daily pollutant concentrations on the website (www.medatliekos.lt). Therefore, environmental protection officers presented an administrative offence report to the company’s executive and repeatedly issued the abovementioned binding instruction to the company. If the instruction is not carried out again and a court confirms that environmental requirements have not been fulfilled, it will serve as a legal basis for suspending the company’s activities.
