Minister of Environment meets with UNESCO experts

2009-07-29

The Minister of Environment, Gediminas Kazlauskas, has met with UNESCO experts Susan Denyer and Pierre Galland currently on a visit to Lithuania. Invited by the Ministry of Environment, the experts have come to Lithuania to evaluate spatial planning documents prepared for the Curonian Spit and the potential results of their implementation. The meeting was attended by Aleksandras Spruogis, Vice-Minister of Environment. Gediminas Kazlauskas thanked the experts for their visit. According to the minister, Lithuanian society is very concerned about the future of the Curonian Spit, and there are many different opinions as to how current problems should be solved.

UNESCO expert Susan Denyer thanked for a comprehensive programme drawn up for the visit, which would enable the experts to familiarise themselves with different attitudes towards the future of the Curonian Spit and form a view of the current situation. "Nice weather during the visit has enabled us to see once again what a wonderful and magic site the Curonian Spit is, and how valuable its nature is. Lithuania is facing a serious challenge of preserving the uniqueness of the Curonian Spit, as it is also a cultural landscape where people live and interact with nature,” Susan Denyer said.

According to Pierre Galland, the problems encountered by the Curonian Spit are not unique. Many world heritage objects are faced with such problems. The exceptional potential of the Curonian Spit also arouses a lot of expectations in society, which often differ.

The Minister of Environment, Gediminas Kazlauskas, expressed hope that after meeting with representatives of different interest groups, the experts would remain neutral and adopt their own attitude towards the problems. “I hope you will remain objective and will be able to resist possible influence and efforts to change your opinion in one way or another,” Gediminas Kazlauskas said. The minister also expressed hope that conclusions prepared by the UNESCO experts would help reconcile extreme points of view and come to agreement.

The UNESCO experts thanked the minister for the invitation to come to Lithuania and participate in the solving of problems faced by the Curonian Spit. “I hope our visit to Lithuania with an advisory mission will help avoid a much more unpleasant visit with a revisory mission,” Pierre Galland said.
