2009-04-20

Gediminas Kazlauskas, the Minister of Environment, met with Dr Birutė Galdikas, a prominent naturalist, a specialist in modern primatology, environmental protection and ethnology, who has written several books about the endangered orang-utan species.

The meeting was also attended by Aleksandras Spruogis, undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment, Laura Dzelzytė, adviser to the minister, Laimutis Budrys, director of the Environmental Protection Department, Selemonas Paltanavičius, head of the Biodiversity Division of the Department, Loreta Pivoriūnaitė, head of the International Birutė Galdikas Ecology Charity and Support Foundation, and other representatives of the ministry and the foundation.

Dr Birutė Galdikas told about her activities in Indonesia and operating plans of her foundation in Lithuania.

“My strongest wish is to plant an oak wood in Lithuania, Birutė Galdikas said. “It should be a wild wood, such as those a thousand years ago. The foundation would also like to establish a Lithuanian and Indonesian foreign information centre.”

The minister noted that such a wood could be planted in a state-protected area. In such a case, the wood would be protected and preserved. Such placed are visited by higher numbers of foreign tourists and Lithuanian residents. The minister said the Ministry of Environment would support this idea.

According to Laimutis Budrys, member of the board of Birutė Galdikas’ foundation and director of the ministry’s Environmental Protection Department, the foundation could support individual environmental projects, such as a bird trap in Ventės Ragas, etc.

Birutė Galdikas said that the foundation would like to acquaint Lithuanian specialists with environmental achievements in Indonesia, so that they could use this knowledge in Lithuania. Long-term internships would also require support from the ministry.

The meeting also addressed possible forms of cooperation of the eminent naturalist and her foundation with the Ministry of Environment.
