Lithuania developing ecotoxicity control system

2009-04-16

A partnership agreement between the Institute of Ecology of Vilnius University and the Environmental Protection Agency on participation in a project entitled Improvement of the Ecotoxicity Control System was signed at the Agency.

“The main purpose of the project is to create a legal base and enhance institutional capacities for the introduction of a waste ecotoxicity control system in Lithuania,” Liutauras Stoškus, director of the Environmental Protection Agency, said. “The main results expected to be achieved include a developed scheme of ecotoxicity tests and a method of evaluation of such test results, prepared ecotoxicity rating criteria and an organised system of their application. A laboratory with modern scientific equipment for measuring ecotoxicity is needed as well. It will facilitate earlier application of preventive measures against water and soil pollution as well as more effective environmental quality management.”

According to Liutauras Stoškus, this partnership agreement between the Environmental Protection Agency and the Institute of Ecology of Vilnius University is another step towards consolidation of efforts of scientific and public bodies in the area of environmental protection. It also provides for the conduct of important scientific research on a national and international scale. It can be a considerable contribution to the implementation of the concept of establishment and development of integrated science, study and business centres (valleys), which has been approved by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania.

The project is financed under the 2007─2013 Cohesion Promotion Action Programme as the measure Enhancement of Environmental Monitoring, Control and Prevention of its first priority Local and Urban Development, Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Nature and Readjustment for Tourism Development.
