International geology conference in Venta Regional Park2008-09-08
On 10-12 September this year, an international conference “Geological Heritage – Bridge, Uniting Countries” will take place in Venta Regional Park. The conference is organized by the European Association for the Conservation of the Geological Heritage (ProGeo), the Lithuanian Geological Service, the State Service for Protected Areas, the Venta Regional Park Administration, the Latvian Agency of Environment, Geology and Meteorology and the Polish State Geology Institute.
Geologists from Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Estonia, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland will participate in the event. Important subjects discussed: Jurassic period heritage in the Baltic region and Poland, Jurassic period park network, geological tourism, geoparks and the history of geological investigation. The participants will dicuss the prospects of geological heritage promotion in the Baltic region. Discussions are planned regarding the creation of geoparks in Lithuania.
Dr. Gerard D. Gierliński, a famous paleonthologist and specialist in dinosaur footprint search will present his speech Dinosaur Hunt. Dr. Marek Graniczy from Poland will participate with Augustava – Venta Channel presentation. On this occasion, Apolinaras Nicius, General Manager of Venta Regional Park will present a lecture on the park’s geological heritage and Dr. J. Satkūnas, LGT Deputy Manager, will present a lecture entitled The Meaning of Geological Heritage.
Members of the conference will visit Papilė, will get acquainted with geological values of Venta Regional Park ans surrounding territories, and will have a chance to appreciate the geological heritage of the Venta river basin in Latvia.
