Groundwater is an invaluable privilege of Lithuania

Today, at 2 p.m., a presentation of the newly issued hydrogeological atlas The Groundwater of Lithuania will take place at the grand hall of the Lithuanian Geological Survey (LGT) under the Ministry of Environment. This publication represents a compendium of several-decade studies by Lithuanian hydrogeologists.

The book contains textual and cartographic information on the formation and extraction conditions of Lithuania’s invaluable asset groundwater, its temperature, chemical composition and resources in all aquifers, as well as on mineral and saline water.

The especially abundant groundwater resources are a privilege of Lithuania. Our country is one of the few world countries where groundwater is used exclusively for both the centralised and individual water supply. Compared to surface water, groundwater has many advantages as it is naturally better protected from pollution and is enriched with dissolved minerals needed for the human organism. According to US scientists, only one of six residents worldwide has the possibility to use adequate water.

This hydrogeological atlas is dedicated to the hundredth anniversary of Restored Lithuania and will be useful not only for professionals but also for investors, environmental study, research and education and other institutions.
