Lithuania is among the leading EU countries in the field of municipal waste management2018-01-02
Lithuania is among the leading EU countries in terms of municipal waste disposal and processing indicators.
In 2016, 29.8 % out of 1.27 million tonnes of municipal waste generated in the country was disposed of in landfills, 17.4 % was combusted in the energy generation process, 24.6 % was recycled, 23.5 % was composted, and 4.8 % was stored. Compared to 2012, the situation has undergone visible improvements. Even 73 % out of 1.33 million tonnes of municipal waste generated in2012 was disposed of in landfills, 0.02 % was combusted during the power generation process, 19.6 % was recycled, 3.8 % was composted, and 3.8 % was stored.
In the field of municipal waste processing, Lithuania’s indicators are higher than the EU average which equals 45.6 %. In our country, 48 % of this waste was recycled (including composting) in 2016. Thus, we have surpassed Estonia, Latvia, France, Poland, Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary, etc.
According to Vice-Minister of Environment Dalius Krinickas, the indicators of municipal waste management are improving because the infrastructure for the management of this waste has been expanded. The residents are provided with more and more possibilities to sort out waste and they are constantly encouraged to do so. Therefore, more secondary raw materials are collected and recycled.
