Lithuania passes the environmental exam for accession to the OECD2017-10-09
Lithuania is ready to implement the environmental requirements of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This positive opinion of the Environmental Policy Committee of the OECD, which was officially approved on 6 October during its special session held in Paris, completed the negotiations process of our country’s accession to the OECD in the field of environmental protection.
Lithuania, which wants to become a member of the OECD, is being evaluated by 21 committees of this organisation. The Ministry of the Environment provided information to two of these committees – the Environmental Policy Committee and the Chemicals Committee.
During all the OECD meetings, in which Lithuania’s progress in the field of environmental protection was presented, our country’s readiness for membership in the OECD was evaluated positively. Both OECD experts and OECD member countries noted that Lithuania has developed the required operative legal and political mechanisms for implementing the OECD requirements.
The aforementioned positive formal opinion of the Environmental Policy Committee will be included in the final OECD formal opinion concerning Lithuania’s readiness. The final formal opinion will be adopted on completion of evaluations by all 21 committees. If these evaluations are completed timely, Lithuania can expect to be invited to join the OECD in June 2018.
